Currently the Department of Immigration & Multicultural Affairs issues approx 130 different types of entry Visas into Australia. Temporary Resident Visas:

Business Short Stay:- These visas are designed for persons wishing to visit Australia for genuine business reasons (& stay up to 3 months at any one time).
In certain circumstances these visas may be granted & remain valid for multiple entries for periods of up to 10 years.

Business Long Stay:- These visas are for persons seeking a longer term entry on genuine business &/or employment grounds.
They are generally granted, with multiple entry facility, for periods up to 4 years & may be extended in certain circumstances.

Retirement Visas:

These visas are designed for people.couples without dependants over 55 years of age wanting to retire from work in Australia.
They require transfer of substantial assets amongst's the criteria & are issued for 4 years with renewals each 2 years.

Permanent Resident Visas:

There are many different classes & sub classes of visas where applications result in permanent residency.
The main categories are:
Skilled Occupations (sponsored & unsponsored).
Business Types (senior executives, business operator, established business, investment linked, etc.)
Family Stream (spouse, child, fiancée, carrer & many others).

Each of the various classes has it own different criteria & some of the classes are "capped"; that is ; once the quota of approved applications under a certain type of visa is reach; no more approvals are issued, or, approvals are give but held until a new budget allocation is released by D.I.M.A.
Students:Opportunities have been made available for some overseas students completing Australian study courses to apply for permanent residency & to remain in Australia until their case is processed.
Special:There are classes relating to sporting & creative talents, former P/R of Australia, New Zealand citizens, etc.
